Boot Polish

Boot Polish

Sunil reached Mumbai Kurla railway station to board the evening train back home. He was early and was waiting for the train to arrive in the platform. He looked around and saw an old cobbler sitting beside a steel pole on the platform, religiously polishing shoes for his customer, and full of smiles.

Sunil observed that the cobbler was doing his work methodically. He also keenly observed that the cobbler had a very infectious smile.

Observing people is an art.

The cobbler sat on a small cushion on the floor and in front of him was the working table which had the metal shoe stand mounted to hold the shoe while repairing and polishing. On the side of the working table was written “Rs.15 for “cream” and Rs.10 for sada” polish. Besides him, were a variety of shoe polishes, shoe soles, sandals, and other shoe accessories.

Sunil noticed that within minutes, the shoes were transformed to sparkling black and the cobbler gave back the shoes to the customer with happiness and smiles at his own good work.

Sunil’s train arrived and after getting into the compartment, his eyes turned again towards the cobbler. His keen observations led his mind to explore the distinct behaviour of the cobbler and the reasons behind the cobbler’s happiness.

Sunil’s mind got into a rational exploratory mode - to find answers to the many questions spinning in his mind about the cobbler –

“How can an individual be so happy and ever smiling when people around are clouded in their own thoughts, continuously thinking about something or the other, some with stress and most in pensive moods?”

“Here was a man, a cobbler, who was using his skills to perform his work diligently. Many would say that these skills are “low level” skills. But the cobbler was not bothered about anyone’s opinion. The cobbler was also a professional, earning a living by using his skills.”

Sunil wondered about himself, “He was an engineer and a management graduate, using his business skills to manage his business. But what is the difference between the cobbler’s and his outlook towards life?”

“The answer lies in very simple facts of life – Everyone is running after something or trying to achieve something in life, leading to stress, fear of the unknown and not realising that there is more to life. Many people have forgotten the meaning of “contentment.”

Contentment is a virtue and people who are contended with what they have, see life differently and have no regrets.

We have made life so complicated that we do not have time for experiencing happiness in small things in life and enjoy life as it comes.”

On the other hand, Sunil felt that the cobbler was also working hard for his living but at the same time, enjoyed his work and was definitely not thinking about success, creating wealth or wanting for more.

In reality, most of us have forgotten the question to ask ourselves – what are we trying to achieve in life and whom are we trying to satisfy in life? Tough questions with no answers.

Sunil questioned himself “Should one not be ambitious?”

“Nothing wrong in being ambitious and working towards a defined goal in life. The point being missed by many is that, there is much more to life than just a materialistic outlook.”

God has destined everyone’s life. You always go on in life living fully in the present and facing challenges which life throws at you.

The cobbler’s happy smiles made Sunil recollect one of his favourite songs from an old Raj Kapoor movie and started singing in his mind -  “किसी की मुस्कुराहटों पे हो निसार…………जीना इसी का नाम है… (Offer yourself to bring a smile to someone..………….This is what life is all about…..!!!). The lyrics of the song teaches a simple life philosophy!!

In Sunil’s sub conscious mind, he felt the cobbler saying, “Contentment leads to happiness. Happiness makes one smile by seeing the positive side of life. To me, smiling is my way of life and it does not cost anything. And, it makes others feel happy!”

  7. Great story Venkatesh.

It brought back the memories of my Father who always used to keep advicing me repeatedly " Be Contented". 😃😃😃

I used to disagree with my Father.

In my view, new innovations happen and existing problems are solved when there is a hunger for success.

99.9% of the Indians are similar to the cobbler. We just live life like a merry go round.

    Thanks

  13. Another classic flows out of your pen, PV!! Congratulations.

I was pleasantly shocked to see a hardcore Tamil making reference to a Hindi film song of yesteryear!! A sign of the 'Modi'fied times, I guess.

Learning to enjoy one's work does bring a sense of peace in life. But that is easier said than done. Whether we like it or not, materialism is a fact of life. For most people, success is defined by one's worldly possessions; so there's nothing wrong with aspiring to lead a better life. In fact, I think it would be selfish not to because we owe it to our loved ones; and If that causes some discomfort for us, so be it.

"Stress" happens when there is a mismatch between the demands put on a person and his or her ability to meet those demands consistently! But such a mismatch is desirable because it pushes us to continually enhance our ability to meet Life's challenges. How many people have succeeded only from listening to upanyasams followed by puliyodarai prasadam?

The cobbler in the video appears to be smiling probably because he forgot to wear his dentures. Even if he was indeed smiling, one can hardly conclude that he's leading a 'contented' life. If our hero Sunil had struck up a conversation with the cobbler instead of looking thoughtfully at him from a distance and talking to himself, he would have known his true story. And of course he would have missed his train, and messed up his mood for the evening.

Whether one is a cobbler or Business owner, 'contentment' is when we walk into our home after a tough day at work to hear sounds of cheerful kids, the TV blaring at full volume, and to see the spouse who informs you that kaapi podi is 'over'!!

Looking for that 'something more' in life is a waste of time because it is like looking for a black cat in a dark room when it is not there!!

    जीना इसी का नाम है…

  18. very good message , I think,
Contentment is all about our mind , it could be obtained with a good coffee in a paper cup, stainless steel cup or silver cup, as long as , we are aware that we are longing for a good coffee and not for a good cup, we are on right track
    Good one

  19. As always, reading Venki’s story is like walking away after watching Mani Ratnam’s movie previews, there is some substance.
The substance here is the observation and Sunil is the observer who has that art (as Venki says in the 3rd paragraph). All discoveries and basic physics laws were given to us or made for us to realize from basic observations.
Looks like one day, smile or fun are going to be natural states exhibited by a few and only for some Sunils will realize it and ducks for other Sunils and Sinnu. Or in simple Tamil term ‘Nadai pinnam’

Good one PV. Life is all about contentment . And very well communicated . Observation is key to realising many things . Observation and analysis improve our life style . Many times we miss to observe nature in our busy schedules . If Iam right , Your first blog runs in similar line . A Barber enjoying his work and trying to be part of being useful to the society . Great inspiration . In the same line “boot polish “ too. This is a materialistic world . But - how we handle that and how much we need is the tricky thing and Very well presented with thought provoking questions ..

  21. Hi Venkatesh, Very well written. These days every one is running behind something without satisfaction going all over the world. As we age, cutting down our requirements and living a simple life will definitely give all the happiness. When I stayed in Mumbai for a short time travelling in the trains, i use to be amazed by the cobbler, mufuli wallah on trains (who sells saying time pass), pani puri seller on the road corner.

  25. A good thought-provoking story PV! Everyone has troubles and difficulties in varying degrees and at different stages in life. But carrying on with your work with a smile is definitely a gift! Smile often and smile freely- it increases your face value and sends positive vibrations! But don’t end up being an ‘elichha vaayan’ though :-)

  26. I liked the way you couched a deep truth in a seemingly simple story. Indeed your writing coaxes us to ponder on how contented we are given our life situations. Keep writing such thought provoking pieces, Venkatesh ji!

  27. Hi Venkatesh, good blog. It shows the importance of being contented in whatever job you do. Job contentment can only be there if the employee ( including self employed) is engaged and passionate about the job. The success and contentment are results

  28. Good story Venkatesh ..the description of the cobbler set up brings the picture in our mind. The problem is that in this rat race of going behind the materialistic things, people forget about contentment . Not only we slog a donkeys life to earn and save not for us for the next generation also and many people save it for two to three generations. The journey of life is lost worrying about the destination which is not clear. Good message to enjoy life as we have only one chance contentment is all about what you have and being gratefull for it..

  29. Observing people is an Art. I always enjoy watching people when ever I get an opportunity especially during journeys. You come across various kind lof people young kids middle aged, old people, family, solo traveller etc.,It gives insight in to so many things You can know their behaviour, their actions and their reactions for the things happening how they handle a particular situation etc.. some times kids are lovely to watch and interact..please don't think this as intruding in their privacy ..we just watch as we can't close our eyes and travel..

  30. Jeena isi ka naam hai.... And this blog made me smile. Now reading this could make someone smile would not have been a top priority thought for you. But it did anyway.
Words make or break a person. Whether these words are told to you by someone else or you say it to yourself. It has a huge impact. Your words made me smile. You could make me picture these two humans who are both trying to live a life and to do so they are doing everything or the things that can keep them going. What our minds tell us sometimes makes us happy and sometimes not.
But hope is for those who see light even in the dark.
    A heart warming read.
